How Well Do You Know Your Target Audience?

Here, I will show you how to find your target audience and transform it into a persona to guide your marketing and sales efforts, ultimately improving your results and sales.

How Can You Identify Your Target Audience?

There are both digital and traditional methods to collect data. Depending on how advanced and active your company is, the importance of different elements of audience analysis will vary.

Existing Data

If you already have an existing business, it’s usually smart to start by examining your current audience and creating a persona for them, as well as understanding the impact of your current marketing and sales efforts on them. This will help you compare the persona you create later and understand the changes in your target persona.

Google Analytics

You can find a lot about your current audience in Google Analytics. For example, you can examine demographic data: who is your average website visitor? If you want to delve deeper and have pages where the audience may differ, it’s often useful to examine these segments separately. Through Google Ads, you can learn more about the audience interacting with your ads, including their online activity times, the devices they use (mobile, computer, or tablet), and much more information that helps you understand your audience to make your ads more effective and cost-efficient.

Facebook Page Insights

You can read data from Facebook in several ways. If you have your own page with followers, you can track data under the “Page Insights” tab. This is where your page can appear here.

Facebook might be the most useful tool for figuring out who your target market is. Facebook groups have been at the forefront of this. A Facebook group is an association of people who are actively interested in exchanging information regarding a particular subject. It's a veritable information goldmine for you as a marketer.

Facebook group analysis can be done in easy steps. Choose Facebook groups that have the most relevance to your industry. Apply to become a member of the group. Determine the average user and the group's overall target audience. Pick a few group members who you believe best represent the intended audience.

Look up information on gender, age, location, family status, place of residence, employment, and other details on their profiles. The better, the more information you can collect.

Meta (Facebook) Audience Targeting Information

The user data that Meta has is their unique selling proposition (USP). They provide us marketers with access to this data via their advertising tools. Different target audiences can be easily identified with the help of this data.

In essence, you can learn about the users' locations, a range of interest categories, and the size of various demographic metrics. Use Meta Audience Insights to collect data about various target audiences. See yours here

Instagram Insights

If you have linked your Instagram profile to Facebook, you can read your Instagram insights.

YouTube Analytics

For companies and individuals running a YouTube channel, YouTube Analytics is available.

LinkedIn Analytics

For companies that use LinkedIn as a channel, LinkedIn Analytics is also available.

Other Data Sources

Many other social media platforms provide data about your users. Check the channels where you have a user base. DMPs (Data Management Platforms) are a part of modern advertising.

New Audiences

Many new companies start their sales operations without any available audience data, which is often a mistake.

Keyword Analysis

You can analyze the keywords your audience uses in search engines, especially Google, to understand the most used and effective keywords, as well as the cost per click if you plan to use them in marketing. Understanding the keywords used by your audience helps you grasp the language and needs of your target audience.

Review Data

If you sell a product or service that can be reviewed, it’s appropriate to examine what users are writing.

Surveys

A simple way to collect data is to ask people their opinions. Surveys are the easiest way to do this. You can create surveys yourself for free using Google Forms.

Traditional Methods

In addition to digital methods, there are several ways to collect data from the target audience by meeting users in person.

User Testing

User testing is often used in product development and testing. However, it can also be a method to better understand the needs and behavior of your target audience.

How Deep Should Audience Analysis Be?

There are companies that sell audience analysis as a service. It’s advisable to take an incremental approach to this work, testing marketing efforts and collecting and analyzing data periodically to ensure effectiveness.

Always Remember!

All these tools help you understand your audience and create the persona you will target and address in your marketing of services or products. Without creating the persona, it will be difficult to accurately direct your marketing to the target audience.
